Dear Scott,

The wipers in my pickup truck needed replacing. They struggled in the downpour and I had to lean strong to the passenger side to hear her words. Captured in a moment of transparency Kathie said of the woman with hat in hand,

It’s that moment when you realize you’re a grown-ass woman, and that life doesn’t always bring you exactly what you want. But you’re glad to do what it brings you to do… and you want to do it well.

October of 2018 brought us to west Texas again. The week had come and gone for Kathie and the 30+ artists who came to paint big sky and cactus… and maybe sell a piece or two. But it’s their camaraderie and love of the landscape that keeps them returning.

The event ended on Sunday and the artists were thanked with an old-school 1880’s chuck wagon breakfast… grits, black coffee, eggs and every sort of pig product. The chef pulled out the fiddle, greased up the bow and the day-of-rest began to take hold.
One woman, dressed in period costume and coaxed a bit by the artists, agreed to model for the painters. Easels sprung open signaling a perfect day but Kathie chose to take some photos for that maybe-next painting and whispered,

Sometimes in life you just have to lean on a pole. Stand there. And breathe.

Two months later the Oregon Trail woman rose up out of Kathie’s canvas. She was someone’s daughter and someone’s mother, filled with both loss and hope. A woman whose world kept expanding as she adjusted her life into the next challenge. I said to Kathie, you are painting you.

Sure enough the image of our model faded into yesterday and Kathie embraced her work as I’ve never witnessed. A woman willing to explore, a woman of humble and generous heart, a woman finished with pettiness and a woman who never looks beyond the boundaries she’s been given.

There may not be a twinkle in the eye, Kathie concludes, but you always want to finish well. And look nice doing it.

Dear Buddy and Kathie, I have yet to meet you but hope to at some date in the future. The frequent emails Buddy and I exchanged trying to set up a workshop here in Arkansas made me feel as though we had already met. I love this painting and all the emotion it conveys...it is simply beautiful, and yet elegant, too. Buddy, your letter brought tears to my eyes. I hope we will all meet in 2022!

Profound quotes, profound art... makes for a profound letter. Miss you two. So glad that I walked out on Main Street in Bozeman that day to look at Kathie's plein air paintings in the back of your vehicle. Been a fan of you both ever since!

Buddy, thank you for reaching out to me. Our conversation truly inspired and comforted my soul. The one thing I did not convey was the one line in the above letter which resinated with my own path of life. "It's that moment when you realize you're a grown-ass woman, and that life doesn't always bring you exactly what you want. But you're glad to do what it brings you to do… and you want to do it well." Doing it well is my goal. Thank you both for sharing your wonderful gifts with all of us painters and collectors.

I finally got around to reading this wonderful story about -Resolute”. This is how I discovered Kathie! This beautiful painting was featured on the back cover of Plein Air Magazine, November 2020. I wanted to see it live and in person because it moved me and I knew there must be a story about who inspired this creation of such beauty and resolve. Logged onto Leiper's Creek Gallery website, was already planning our road trip to experience this wonderful creation live and in person only to find out it had already been sold! At a price not in my budget! The rest is history as I have just finished my first Zoom Art classes with Kathie (and Buddy her videographer, executive producer, etc). 8 Winter Wednesdays has been the highlight of my week for the last 2 months. I have learned soo much and I am inspired to paint and be the best I can be as I evolve in my painting journey of just a year. Kathie's enthusiasm and true love of painting are contagious! Thank you both for making this happen and looking forward to April's Plein Air Wednesdays! Until then be safe and Thank You for all you do! Deb Green
